In this first section we will explore why we believe every church needs an effective Security Team, how to communicate that need to your church leadership, and how to begin recruiting, training and building a solid Security Team. Peace of mind results when you have men and women gifted to protect your congregation who are trained and placed in positions to respond to the congregation with a pastoral heart.
Your building(s), property and equipment need to be protected during your services as well as during the week. This is also true of your church staff. In this section we will review best practices in these areas as well as the area of finance and money handling procedures. Increasing the trust of your congregation regarding finance could be as simple as adding or modifying a few practices.
The youth and children of your church have literally been left in your charge. There is additional scrutiny placed on security of these two areas, with good reason. In this section we will outline both the major security concerns involving minors as well as how to minimize the opportunity for them to occur. The safety of their children is one of the top church concerns for parents.
When most people think of “church”, this is what they think of - the weekend service or major event hosted by their church. How do we maintain a safe and secure worship environment during these services while keeping the focus on God and His ability to change lives? Remember, He is calling the lost and broken home. This is the delicate balance of “safe” and “open” that we are called to maintain.
Identifying the threat to the safety and security of your church before it rises to the level of “incident” is the essence of a well prepared Security Team. If we have done our job of constant threat monitoring, identification, isolation, and eliminating most members of the church will never know there was a concern. To do this well takes solid planning, training, and each Security Team member executing on their role.
This is the area that most Pastors and leaders do not want to consider or prepare for happening. Most believe the possibility of a major threat or natural disaster happening during a service is minimal. A quick and well rehearsed response to a major response or natural disaster will save lives and strengthen the ongoing health of your congregation. Understanding when and how to lockdown, shelter in place, and/or evacuate are crucial decision
